In the late 1800s, Sicilian-born Salvatore Orlando settled in the Basque fishing town of Getaria and introduced Italian salting techniques to the Cantabrian coast. He married Simona Olasagasti, and the family cannery that bears her name has operated since 1927, now run by their grandson from a factory in Markina.
